The latest project from the CEO of Grill Concepts (The Daily Grill, Grill on the Alley) is Public School 612, a unique new bar and eatery in downtown Los Angeles serving craft brews chosen by expert “beer chick” Hallie Beaune and a beer-friendly menu by Daily Grill Executive Chef Phil Kastel. Aiming to educate their patrons about the art of food and beer, PS 612 pairs upscale pub picks with tasty domestic and imported bottles, and cans, along with wine, spirits, and cocktails. Great for brew connoisseurs and new drinkers alike, this trendy new addition to the Daily Grill’s downtown location is open from 4pm to midnight and consequently attracting a slightly younger crowd. The back-to-school concept and the uncommonly varied selection of craft brews have undoubtedly helped this transition, but we at Prescriptive Music feel that the fun, cool, yet recognizable background music completes the overall vibe at PS 612.
In keeping with the educational theme, the menu is printed on marble composition notebook pages complete with a handy beer glossary to help you make your decision (or at least try to understand it). Besides serving “American History” (domestic) and “Study Abroad” (imported) drafts and “Study Group” 750 mL shareable bottles, the menu also offers “School Spirits” and hand-crafted signature cocktails in a casual, communal atmosphere. Several menu items include PS 612’s craft beer in their recipes, and if not, bartenders will make pairing suggestions, although the most popular food item seems to be the Colorado Lamb Burger topped with Brie and Cranberry Jam. Reviewers rave about the School’s most popular dessert, the Chocolate Stout Float, which combines real Chocolate Stout with vanilla ice cream, making for an unforgettable taste combination. Drafts consist mostly of local California brews as well as some Belgian and German imports, but the selection of bottles and cans spans the whole globe.
Customers make their orders at a counter and bring their number back to large, sharable tables in a lofty, modern space complimented by fun, upbeat electronic sounds from the synth-pop heroes of the 80s and the last few years. Nostalgic hits from 80s artists like Blondie, Pet Shop Boys and the Cure bring older crowds back to school days while blending seamlessly with modern electro-pop beats from Two Door Cinema Club, Temper Trap and Phoenix. Cool, upbeat background music, great grub and an unrivaled selection of craft brews make for the most exciting, delicious education money can buy. Enroll at Public School 612 today!
