There are a few things that make me not want to like singer-songwriter Matt Corby. For starters he was the runner up on Australian Idol (yes it’s not just American). Secondly, he’s a hunky guy from Australia (which, sorry, never wins points with me). Third and perhaps most damning is that my wife loves him.

Unfortunately those petty things would usually make me skip over reading up on the 25 year old. Oh he’s also 25, so add that to the list.

Regardless of my nonsense, somehow the young musician has just released an early contender for year-end best-of lists.

In early March, Corby released his debut full-length titled, Telluric, and the album reviews which followed have been glowing. Glowing to the point that there have been comparisons to the psychedelic pop of Tame Impala (also an Aussie band) and the somber lushness of Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver). While I feel those influences are not hard to hear, I also hear some James Blake in there as well, so fans take note.

The album’s debut single, “Monday” which is composed entirely of self-made loops, has also made a strong impression with listeners, as have other tracks such as “Knife’s Edge” and “Sooth Lady Wine.”

Check out “Monday”, “Knife’s Edge”, and “Sooth Lady Wine” below, while underneath that, are upcoming Matt Corby tour dates. If he’s coming to your town, make sure not to miss out on someone who is set to be one of the breakout stars of 2016. It will also probably end up being a good date night.
