From a singer-songwriting perspective Sharon Van Etten is in a few different worlds right now. On the incredibly heart-breaking Are We There it’s evident that she really doesn’t know where exactly she is – but she’s certainly finding her own voice.
This is an increasingly profound piece of work that seems to let the listener into this weird world of heartache that refuses to classify itself as a break up album. It’s a journey from the delves of stupefying lows to gaining pleasure from the little treasures in life. Really, this record is about risking it all to get what you really desire, and ultimately falling short.
From a production standpoint Van Etten has grown, but her sometimes bitter but always sweet songwriting still shines through the noise and clutter of her evolving sound.
This is a very good record for an insanely rainy day.
