Sharon Jones has died at the age of 60 after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer. The soul singer and leader of the funk revival band Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings passed away surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.

After being diagnosed in 2013 Jones underwent surgery and treatment before returning to touring and recording later that year releasing Give the People What They Want. The cancer returned in late-2015.

The Brooklyn-native by way of South Carolina, Jones was working as a corrections officer at Rikers Island and split her time as a wedding singer. It was around this time that she met Dap-King’s bassist and Daptone Records co-founder at a recording session. She was asked to become the new lead singer for the group.

Sharon Jones leaves behind a devastated fan base, a loving family, band and the record label, Daptone Records, that she helped build in the early-2000’s in Bushwick.
