(An All-Beatles) On This Day..
1966 The Beatles had their tenth consecutive UK No.1 single with “Paperback Writer”. The track is marked by the boosted bass guitar sound throughout, partly in response to John Lennon demanding to know why the bass on a certain Wilson Pickett record far exceeded the bass on any Beatles records. It was also cut louder than any other Beatles record, due to a new piece of equipment used in the mastering process.
1973 George Harrison started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with “Living In The Material World”, his second US No.1. His third studio solo album was the follow-up to 1970’s acclaimed All Things Must Pass and his massive charity project, The Concert For Bangladesh.
1976 Paul McCartney and Wings played the last date on their Wings Over America tour at the Forum in Los Angeles.

Brand New Music
Vince Staples | Big Fish Theory
After To Pimp A Butterfly it was perceivable that the ‘King of the Game’ argument was over: Kendrick was King. Vince Staples has made his case and he’s now neck and neck. Big Fish Theory shows Staples not only taking a ton of risks and progressing as an artist, but it is clear that Staples is making his own personal statements. Big Fish Theory surpasses all expectations with beats that buck current trends and lyrics that are incisive and absolute fire. Best hip hop record of the year to date.
Laurel Halo | Dust
Complex and completely engrossing Laurel Halo comes highly recommended to those who have nothing to fear. By creating and putting together abstract and beautiful elements in a experimental and off-kilter way, Halo brings a easy yet poetic sound to this essential LP.
Algiers | The Underside of Power
These Altanta-based genre smashers bring a renewed sense of excitement to their sophomore LP. From the thinly veiled references to T.S. Eliot to the Black Panther samples, this is an incredibly serious record. Remember when we said that the political situation was going to create great art and music; here’s a great example.
