Owen Pallet has had a busy year to say the least. After releasing the record, In Conflict, the second he’s done under his legal name, he has been freelancing as the best musical theory prof. you’ve ever had!

He’s been writing articles that explain and analyze why exactly those catchy pop songs that you love (sometimes not because you know why) stick in your head so badly. He did a few of them for the Guardian earlier this year about Katy Perry’s “Teenaged Dream” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and then did a whole series of them for Buzzfeed.

This one may have had the best quote of the whole series:

“The truth about Mariah is this: her upper register is the musical equivalent of black truffle. You could shave it on to any shit and we’ll still order it.”
